Matthew H. Spieker

Matthew H. Spieker is an associate professor of music education at Ball State University in Muncie, IN. He has been a music educator for over 30 years and has taught all levels of orchestra and general music in two U.S. school districts and in Berlin, Germany. He holds degrees of BME from the University of Northern Colorado, MM from Converse College, and a DA from the University of Northern Colorado.

Dr. Spieker’s main interests are in string pedagogy and orchestral music for youth. He has conducted string and orchestral honor ensembles throughout the United States, Europe, and Beijing, China. He also has presented many national teacher education workshops through NAfME, ASTA, and the Midwest Clinic.

Published articles include the American String Teacher, Teaching Music, Journal of Historical Research in Music Education, General Music Today, and Research & Issues in Music Education. Dr. Spieker has two entries in Teaching Music Through Performance in Orchestra: Volume 4. Most recently, Dr. Spieker has published String Tech: An Introduction to String Basics published by Conway Publications.
