Koi Pond is a composition written for intermediate string orchestras. It is intended to help young musicians learn how to shift. An exercise I do with students is called sirens. This is where I give students permission so slide on the string from one position to another. These exercises can sound monotonous (and therefore annoying) but I managed to put this into a piece where they sound beautiful. My inspiration was Butterfly Lover’s Concerto. Search for this on YouTube and you will find several performances of this. Although written for violin, my favorite performance is with musicians using traditional Chinese instruments. A Directors Comment video will be made soon.
